Hey Did You Know?
Twenty years ago, the Charlotte metropolitan area, which includes eight counties across North and South Carolina, was home to just over 1.9 million residents. Today, that number has climbed to more than 3.2 million a nearly 70 percent increase since 2005 (U.S. Census Bureau, 2025).
This extraordinary regional growth continues to shape housing demand, infrastructure, and workforce needs. It reinforces the importance of policies that align housing, transit, and economic development across county and state lines.
(The Charlotte metro area includes Mecklenburg, Cabarrus, Gaston, Iredell, Lincoln, and Union Counties in North Carolina, and Lancaster and York Counties in South Carolina.)
