Duke Energy Extends COVID Moratorium on Power Disconnections

According to a recent Charlotte Business Journal article, Duke Energy Corp. informed North Carolina regulators that it is extending its voluntary suspension of disconnections for low-income customers behind on their bills. Traditionally, there is an annual moratorium on disconnections from November to March every year. However, several extensions have taken place since February 2020. The Delta variant of Covid-19 has caused additional hardships and delayed a return to more normal, therefore, (vulnerable) customers will remain subject to the extension of Duke Energy’s moratorium on disconnections for nonpayment until March 31, 2022.
