Charlotte Outlines Process for Selecting Next Mayor
So, by now, I'm sure you've heard that Mayor Vi Lyles has announced her resignation, and the City of Charlotte is now beginning the process of appointing a new mayor to serve the remainder of her term.
Charlotte City Council recently approved the process and timeline for selecting the city's next mayor. A few key details include:
- Applications will be open from June 2 through June 9.
- Applicants must be at least 21 years old, a resident of Charlotte, and a registered Democrat, as state law requires the replacement to be from the same political party as the departing mayor.
- Candidate interviews will be conducted publicly and in person.
- Charlotte City Council is scheduled to vote on the appointment on June 22.
- The newly appointed mayor will take office on July 1 and serve through the remainder of the current term, which expires in December 2027.
While this may feel like uncharted territory, Charlotte has been here before. In 2014, former Mayor David Clotfelter was appointed following the resignation of Patrick Cannon. A year earlier, former Mayor Patsy Kinsey was appointed after Anthony Foxx left City Hall to serve as U.S. Secretary of Transportation under President Barack Obama.
As this process moves forward, we expect significant interest from both current and former elected officials, as well as community leaders. We will continue to monitor developments and provide updates as they become available.
