The Federal Clean Air Act, Section 608, requires certification for anyone who services or repairs appliances and equipment containing regulated refrigerants. The EPA also restricts the sale of refrigerants to certified technicians only. Anyone handling refrigerants at your property must be EPA Certified.

In this course students learn about and will be tested on Type I, Type II, and Universal. Here's a breakdown of what each type covers and what students can expect out of each.

Type I Certification (Small Appliances)

Covers:

  • Equipment with 5 lbs. of refrigerant or less
  • Typically factory-sealed systems

Examples:

  • Window A/C units
  • Residential refrigerators & freezers
  • PTAC units (common in apartments/hotels)
  • Vending machines

Key Focus:

  • Safe recovery of refrigerant from small systems
  • Proper disposal practices
  • Leak prevention in sealed units

Type II Certification (High-Pressure Systems)

Covers:

  • High-pressure and very high-pressure appliances
  • Systems with more than 5 lbs. of refrigerant

Examples:

  • Split-system air conditioners
  • Heat pumps
  • Rooftop units
  • Supermarket refrigeration systems

Key Focus:

  • Leak detection and repair requirements
  • Refrigerant recovery techniques for larger systems
  • System evacuation and charging procedures

What to Know

  • Both require passing the EPA Core exam + the specific Type exam
  • If you pass Type I + Type II + Type III, you earn Universal Certification (most versatile option)
  • Type II is generally more complex and valuable for HVAC careers, especially in multifamily maintenance
