THE GREATER CHARLOTTE APARTMENT ASSOCIATION RECEIVES TRANSFORMING HEALTH CHAMPION AWARD FOR THEIR SMOKE-FREE HOUSING WORK

CHARLOTTE, NC - JUNE 28, 2017

The Greater Charlotte Apartment Association (GCAA) received the Transforming Health Champion Award from Region 4 Tobacco Free Alliance in recognition for their commitment to creating a healthier community through smoke-free housing. On April 25th, the GCAA launched their

smoke-free certification program which recognizes those multi-family communities within Charlotte and the surrounding areas that have taken the environmentally friendly initiative to go smoke-free. Since the program launch, 37 multi-family communities have signed up for the certification (visit www.greatercaa.org for a full list).
In order to qualify for the GCAA Smoke-Free Certification, a community must have a lease or contract that prohibits employees, residents and guests from smoking in specified areas in the community. The minimum requirement for the certification is a policy that prohibits smoking indoors, on porches, balconies or patios where applicable. (More broad policies are legal and recommended. They may include other outdoor private and common areas, building perimeter restrictions, 100% smoke-free campus and prohibition of electronic cigarettes and/or hookah.)

The award was presented at the Region 4 Tobacco Control Meeting which took place in Bessemer City on June 22nd
