Ken Szymanski, AICP, Executive Director: GCAA and AANC

Since writing a Master’s Thesis on the dynamics of neighborhood racial change over 30 years ago, Ken Szymanski has been a student of civil rights in housing. He has worked closely with HUD Area Offices in Greensboro, San Antonio, Columbus (OH), Indianapolis, and Louisville. In Charlotte, he has developed a rapport with the NC Fair Housing Center and the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Community Relations Committee, the latter of which presented him with the prestigious “Fair Housing Hero” Award in April of 2008. He received this award for the significant role he has played in advocating equal opportunity housing to community groups, real estate organizations, public officials, and the general public during his 22 years at the GCAA. The CRC also acknowledged the fact that Ken has taught a Fair Housing course to over 1,000 GCAA members throughout his tenure at the Association.
